Ankarafantsika and its amazing red canyon

The west of Madagascar is not only a vacation spot but also a place of discovery. The province of Majunga has many surprises in both its splendor and its biodiversity that lodges there. In this blog post, we will not focus on the big city in question but rather on Ankarafantsika, an authentic protected area located a hundred km south of Majunga.

A rich fauna and flora heritage


Like all Madagascan protected areas, the Ankarafantsika Park has a rich flora and fauna biodiversity. You will find rare and endemic animal and plant species and a dreamlike landscape that you will not find anywhere else. During your visit, you will meet on the way lemurs, large birds like hawks, or medicinal plants and precious woods.



A red canyon worthy of Western movies


Ankarafantsika is a mythical place where you could discover the red canyon spread over a few kms of land. If you're a fan of western movies, you'll remember a few scenes when you see this must-see place. Two hours of walk allow you to cross the savanna and cross this authentic and lunar landscape. You will not miss the red canyons called "Ankarokaroka lavaka", a wild site marked by red rock cathedrals. According to locals living near the park, the area has recently undergone significant erosion causing a change in the appearance of the rocks. But thinking about it, this natural phenomenon was beneficial to the park, giving it a unique and elegant appearance that is not seen elsewhere.

This place attracts many tourists and scientists. They want to discover its biodiversity but also the splendor of every corner. For information, know that the protected area of Ankarafantsika covers 136,513 hectares of land sherltering 130 species of birds, 8 species of lemurs, 18 species of fish and 75 species of reptiles. The second largest rice granary on the Big Island, it also has 6 sacred lakes and 875 different plant species.
